Subaru Conversion

In-House Conversion service:

Conversion services are available at the shop located in northern Pennsylvania. Schedule an appointment with us and we will locate and prepare the engine of your choice. We usually have several engines in various stages of readiness. Drive your van in or have it towed or shipped here and we will take care of the rest.

We have considerable experience installing the three most commonly installed models of subaru engine - the 135 hp EJ22, the 165 hp SOHC EJ25, and the 230 hp SVX engines, however the EJ22 conversions have been discontinued. Other engines such as the turbo engines or the EZ30 can be done only in-house on a case-by-case basis since there is a not a lot of call for them.

For in-house conversion service in the shop, we charge $1100 to pull your old engine, prep the vehicle, and fully install the conversion. You arrive and drive it away (or have it shipped to you.) Add this charge to the prices below.

Far and away the most popular conversion we offer is the EJ25 SOHC engine, and the price for the basic conversion package is $8200 which includes the full new exhaust system. These engines typically vary in mileage from 20k up to around 40k miles, depending on current availability

Conversion Includes:

New KEP or Smallcar engine adapter
New Smallcar mounts
New Smallcar header exhaust
Subaru computer and wiring harness interface to vanagon
Shortened oil pan (retains stock ground clearance)
Reversed coolant manifold cooling system
All hoses, coolant, other fluids
Power steering and power brakes if fitted
new oxygen sensor, as needed
New rubber engine mounts

Automatic transmission:

The automatic is not a problem to convert but involves some extra work and extra parts.

Automatic transmission $300 extra

Options

Radiator $250 (recommended for older vans, includes new fan switch and heater valve and installation)
New standard clutch $200 (fine for most applications)
New Luk HD clutch $275 (for off-road or other heavy use)
Air conditioning compressor, direct-fit hoses, and receiver/dryer, plus full install and charge - $550 (we guarantee the compressor and hoses only)

A 95 EJ22 fits neatly and well below the decklid in its new syncro home, looking like it was designed to be there.
