Bolt-in (send-away) subaru engine conversion:

Our bolt-in conversion package uses parts engineerred and built here at Vanaru to provide a standardized package that bolts up to the vanagon with no splicing of wires or cutting/modification of the body. It fits easily under the vanagon deck-lid (2WD and 4WD), and uses the stock vanagon transmission. Subaru engines are flat boxer engines just like the original vanagon engine, so the fit is a natural, and it looks like the factory put it there (they should have!)

This turn-key package is ready to bolt in and run and has been engineered to include all parts you may need to install it in your water-cooled vanagon. It comes with the complete cooling system, hookups for power steering, and a complete air intake. Once you have removed the old waterboxer engine, there are a minimum of connections to mate it to your vanagon. There is nothing especially complex about mounting the conversion, just a lot of detail work hooking up and routing things in the engine bay. We supply the package with a full brand-new exhaust already assembled to truly minimize your time spent on the installation.

The 4-cylinder kit can be installed by most amateur mechanics with a space to work and basic tools. Basically, if you have enough tools and ability to remove your old engine, installing this turnkey package should pose no difficulty. Alternatively, In the US we have several authorized installation shops spread out across the country who can get the job done for you. To serve Canada our partner shop in Quebec (Restauration BJP) can serve you (bilingual French and English).

The price for the standard EJ25 conversion package is $9100 including full exhaust. These engines typically have less than 30k miles and often 15k to 20k miles.

We make our own top-quality conversion parts (except the adapter plate) in stainless steel for long corrosion-free life.

Conversion Includes:

  • New engine adapter
  • New stainless-steel Vanaru engine mount
  • New Vanaru header exhaust
  • Subaru computer and wiring harness interface to vanagon
  • Shortened oil pan (retains stock ground clearance)
  • Reversed coolant manifold cooling system
  • All hoses, coolant, other fluids
  • Power brakes and power steering if fitted
  • New rubber engine mounts

Automatic transmission:

The automatic is not a problem to convert but involves some extra work and extra parts.

  • New clutch: $200

  • Air conditioning : compressor, pre-wired harness, and subaru hoses, for adaptation by your own AC shop - $700
